ART OF THE WEEK

Better Homes, Better Gardens by Kerry James Marshall (b. 1955) is on view as part of the Alabama-born artist's Painting and Other Stuff solo exhibition at the Palacio de Velázquez in Madrid's Retiro Park (13 June - 26 October 2014).
Marshall's practice focuses on African American culture and history whilst addressing racial politics, cutural representation and social emacipation. His works attempt to highlight determinations of black identity within a historical context and current realities. As such, the aesthetic and the political co-exist in his imagery.
